MLS NEXT Announces Steps to Combat Racism, Hate and Discrimination

March 18, 2021

NEW YORK (Thursday, March 18, 2021) – MLS NEXT today announced a series of initiatives aimed at combating racism, hate and discrimination while advocating for social justice in the sport of soccer. With a mission of ensuring an inclusive player development environment, free from racism, hate and discrimination, MLS NEXT has established the Equity Action Committee (EAC), adding this new diversity, equity, and inclusion arm of the player development platform, to the overall MLS NEXT governance structure.

MLS NEXT is committed to creating and enacting policies and programs that protect and educate its youth soccer culture of players, coaches and staff through a series of initiatives including educational sessions, guided discussions, and shared experiences. MLS NEXT will provide support for coaches and players without discrimination while emphasizing the League’s commitment to drive positive social change.

“Major League Soccer is committed to cultivating and ensuring an inclusive environment at all levels of the game,” said Sola Winley, Major League Soccer’s EVP and Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer. “The MLS NEXT platform offers an important opportunity to increase access and representation for diverse athletes and administrators, while educating the next generation of players, coaches, leaders and fans who will shape the future of our sport and our communities. Through the implementation of these key initiatives, our hope is that each participant that comes through this program will grow as an athlete and as a person.”

“We are committed to creating lasting change in youth soccer and continuing to build a platform that does not tolerate racism or other discriminatory language or behavior in any context.” said Fred Lipka, MLS NEXT Technical Director. “MLS NEXT will reach tens of thousands of young athletes during a critical time in their life and educating all participants on the value of diversity from the moment they enter our platform is a top priority as we continue to build the sport for a new North America.”

MLS NEXT has outlined the following initiatives that are being immediately actioned:

Educational SeminarsWorking to build antiracist environments throughout the platform, MLS NEXT welcomes Dr. Sonja N. Robinson of Thrive Mind Solutions for this first in a series of instructional discussions.  Through this educational workshop, leaders throughout MLS NEXT will focus on implementing equity and inclusion principles, and practices, in their own clubs.

Exchange of Best PracticesMLS NEXT will continue to work closely with the Girls Academy to further enhance the strategic relationship and offer a deeper more holistic approach to player development. We acknowledge that racism and acts of systemic racial inequalities are not gender specific. Additionally, MLS NEXT in collaboration with Black Players for Change will continue to develop youth programing across the United States and Canada.

Increased Representation in Positions of InfluenceMLS NEXT is focused on increasing diversity in leadership positions within the league and participating clubs. Two members of the MLS NEXT Equity Action Committee will join the MLS NEXT Executive Committee, and one member of the MLS NEXT Equity Action Committee will also sit on the MLS Diversity Committee. In addition, diversity in club leadership has been added as admission criterion for MLS NEXT expansion clubs.

Increased Opportunities for Diverse CoachesMLS NEXT is committed to incorporating an increased number of diverse coaches with the opportunity to earn a coveted Elite Formation Coaching License. The EFCL program is a year-long intensive coaching course, available to select MLS academy coaches and staff, as part of a partnership with the French Football Federation. Many top academy directors and coaches, as well as MLS first team coaches have participated in the program.

Policy Review and ImplementationThe MLS NEXT Equity Action Committee is actively reviewing, enhancing, and implementing policies to ensure an environment free from discrimination of any kind, in any context. To date, the Equity Action Committee has established a direct line of communication to report incidents and has implemented a Disciplinary Process to address infractions with disciplinary measures.

Training MaterialsCoaches, players and parents will have access to training materials amplifying stories, voices and experiences of minority/racialized players, their caregivers, and coaches.

Ken Shingledecker takes over Schoolcraft College women’s soccer program

January 30, 2021

Ken Shingledecker knows his fair share about Livonia soccer.

He has coached club soccer in the city since 2006 — now serving as the recreation director for the Michigan Wolves Soccer Club — along with serving as the head coach of the boys and girls soccer teams at Livonia Stevenson. For him, the college game seemed to be a logical next step. “I always kind of thought that a college job in this area, in Livonia… would be a nice little thing,” Shingledecker said. “I thought this would be a perfect fit.”

Schoolcraft College announced Wednesday that Shingledecker would take over as the next head coach of the women's soccer program, replacing former head coach Joe Carver. “Ken brings a wealth of coaching experience to Schoolcraft College,” Schoolcraft Director of Athletics Cali Crawford said, announcing the hire. “More importantly, Ken has deep-rooted connections within the Livonia area, which should serve us well in our recruiting efforts. I look forward to seeing our women's soccer program grow in the near future.”

Shingledecker has considered Schoolcraft “kind of a home base” for years, working 15 hours a week at St. Joe's Sports Dome on the school's campus. Through the club and high school soccer world in Livonia, he knows the talent that has come through the program and plans on bringing more in his coaching tenure. “It's been where I have done all my work,” Shingledecker said of Livonia. “Even in the community, I know a lot of coaches, I know a lot of players. I'm really, really excited to bring that all to the Schoolcraft campus.” Being a Division 2 junior-college program, Schoolcraft, Shingledecker said, provides soccer players with a chance to prove themselves and move on to a four-year school instead of solidifying a future plan right out of high school.

While taking on this new venture, Shingledecker said he's just adding it to his plate. He said he will remain the head coach for both Stevenson soccer teams and the Michigan Wolves. In terms of recruiting

, Shingledecker said being a college coach and a high school coach at the same time will be “a different animal.” “There's kids that are going to play for me that will go and play at different places,” Shingledecker said. “Everybody is welcome to make their choices, and everybody's goals are different: kids want to go away for school, kids want to go to big schools, kids want to go to a specific school. That stuff is going to happen. “For the kids that want to stay home and stay local and want to play for a coach they know and trust, I think it's an excellent option for them to continue with me, if that's an option.”

Heading into his first season — starting April 2 in a spring season before Schoolcraft's usual fall slate — Shingledecker is inheriting nine returning players along with a few players who will return to the field, having played with him in the past. The head coach said, ahead of the spring, he is hoping to have 16-to-17 players to work with.

No matter the level, Shingledecker's goal remains the same, especially working with a soccer team in Livonia. “The talent level is not an issue even right now,” Shingledecker said. “I really expect a lot from the girls that we have now, that are returning. I think it would be a disservice to think that we are not going to go full-speed ahead and not win all our games.”

Wolves Strong – Brennan Strong

October 26, 2020

BRIGHTON — Brennan Cheladyn knew something wasn’t right.

“There were a couple occasions I had shortness of breath,” he said. “I didn’t always feel so great in the morning. I had some nausea.”

It didn’t add up. Cheladyn was a teenage boy who played soccer at a high level throughout the year. Health and fitness shouldn’t have been an issue.

Then he heard the “C” word.

He had three swollen lymph nodes in his neck removed and was diagnosed on Jan. 10, 2019 with NLPHL, a cancer of the lymph cells.

“It was at first really hard to accept,” said Cheladyn, a freshman at Brighton High School at the time. “I was like, ‘How is this happening to me?’ I’m a young, healthy, pretty fit kid. How does this happen?’”

After undergoing chemotherapy, losing his hair and having “a lot of weird events happen to me,” Cheladyn was declared cancer-free on May 28, 2019.

He made a strong enough recovery to make the Brighton varsity soccer team as a sophomore three months later, even though he was still struggling with the after effects of his fight with cancer.

Now a junior and at full strength, Cheladyn is a starting defender for a team that picked up its sixth shutout of the season Thursday night with a 3-0 victory over Hartland at Scranton Middle School.

Playing a soccer game, something he’s done hundreds of times in his life, is something he no longer takes for granted.

“Oh, my gosh,” he said. “I’ve had such an amazing appreciation for life. Having that whole ordeal, just getting through it, coming back out here with my boys playing soccer, it’s so rewarding. Those couple of months were just terrible. They were hard to get through. I always thought when I’m through this, I’m just going to be happy every day and accept every day, and I can’t wait to get back on the field, too.”

Cheladyn and Brighton coach Mark Howell walked to the middle of the field together as they were recognized as cancer survivors before Brighton’s Pink Week game. Howell overcame a diagnosis of stage 4 melanoma cancer he received in 2012.

“It was emotional,” Cheladyn said. “It was really awesome to come out here on Pink Week. It’s always a touching moment for me and my coach and the whole team. Everyone is touched by cancer, everyone is affected somehow.”

When Cheladyn received his diagnosis, Howell became more than just a coach to him.

“He was phenomenal, honestly,” Cheladyn said. “He set up a program where all my teammates would bring me food, so my parents wouldn’t have to worry about getting me food and could just be concerned about my health. He was such an inspiration, too, giving me his story. It made me feel like a wimp only doing five months of stuff and him going through what he did.”

Howell said the way Cheladyn handled his fight with cancer was uplifting to the entire Brighton soccer program.

“As a teenage kid, I can’t even imagine going through all that,” Howell said. “All those uncertainties, all those fears, on top of being a teenage kid and doing all that stuff. He has such a great attitude. He’s so inspirational to all his teammates, to us as a coaching staff.

“I was already a grown man in my diagnosis, so as difficult as it was, I get a lot of inspiration just watching him live life and put a smile on his face, regardless of how hard a road he had. He’s been such a great beacon of light for the whole program for us to rally behind.”

Brighton (9-2-2) extended its unbeaten streak against Hartland to 31 games (30-0-1) with a first-half goal from Michael Kramer and second-half penalty kicks by Josh Adam and Nick Cassar.

“It was just a great ball from Connor Blood,” Kramer said of his goal. “I haven’t score in a couple games, so it was nice to finally put one in the back of the net, get some confidence up, get us a lead against a big rival, which put us in a position to win the game.”

Hartland fell to 1-7 with only two games left before its district opener at home against Walled Lake Northern at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“We’ve lost five games through shutdowns,” Hartland interim co-coach Eric Anderson said. “We’ve just been trying to get games in, trying to build up to that game speed getting ready for playoffs.”

Elite Platform Club Announcement

May 13, 2020

Strategic objectives and competition format to be created in collaboration with Founding Member clubs

Media Availability:

MLS Technical Director of Player Development Fred Lipka to be joined by MLS club and elite academy spokespersons on a media video conference today at 3:30 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (May 13, 2020) – Major League Soccer today announced that 65 former U.S. Soccer Development Academy clubs will join the League’s existing club academies to create a partnership that will transform youth player development in the United States and Canada.

• CLICK HERE for a full list of Founding Member clubs

The 65 youth clubs will join the MLS academies as Founding Members of MLS’ elite player development platform. The new platform, which will include more than 8,000 players throughout the U.S. and Canada, will consist of elite year-round competition, as well as player identification initiatives, coaching education opportunities, and additional programming to create the premier player development environment.

The platform will operate with a groundbreaking governance structure that promotes collaboration, innovation and input across all areas of the soccer landscape. Within the structure, technical working groups will provide recommendations on the platform’s strategic objectives and standards, outline competition guidelines and formats, as well as introduce platform programming. By unifying the elite player development landscape and creating a collaborative structure, the new platform will accelerate and enhance player development in North America.

With a focus on maximizing each player’s potential, the new development platform will not only provide high-level, year-round competition for players, but will provide important programming, education and innovation in the key areas of player development:

• Player Identification

• Coaching

• Environment

• Personal Growth

• Community Outreach

“There is strong positive momentum and excitement among MLS club academies and elite academy clubs to co-create a platform that will deliver an unparalleled experience for the nation’s top players and clubs,” said Fred Lipka, Vice President and Technical Director of MLS Player Development. “The development of professional and elite players requires a comprehensive and integrated approach, beyond just the competition format, and we are having daily conversations with academy clubs across the country who are committed to building that environment with us.”

Since launching the MLS club academy initiative in 2007, Major League Soccer has demonstrated unprecedented commitment to the development of top level professional players in the United States and Canada, including an investment of more than $70 million last season alone. This investment has produced more than 250 homegrown players that have become professional and national team players, including recent standout players such as Reggie Cannon (FC Dallas, Solar Soccer Club), James Sands (New York City FC academy, New York Soccer Club) and Matt Real (Philadelphia Union, FC Delco).

The elite academy clubs that are Founding Members of the new platform have also been leaders in the development of players for college, MLS and the national teams. Combined, MLS Academies and the elite academies joining the platform have produced more than 90% of the U.S. Youth National Team players in the last year, making the new platform the top destination for the best young players in North America.

With the launch of this new platform, MLS and the elite academy clubs will not only continue to develop world class players but will create a world class soccer development culture that supports and inspires elite players throughout the countries.

“The Sockers FC Chicago organization is excited about this great opportunity to collaborate with MLS, in the development of this new competition platform,” said David Richardson, Sockers FC Chicago Technical Director. “In our soccer communities we feel that our work as leaders of Elite Academies alongside the leaders of MLS Academieswill help to shape a world-class soccer culture in our country. This will be a benefit to all that play, coach, referee, and support our game from the grassroots to the professional level.” “Major League Soccer’s inclusive approach to the greater soccer market is the most exciting aspect of this movement,” said Ryan Miller, Portland Timbers Academy Director. “This new competition will continue to provide a platform for the top player development clubs in the country to get the most meaningful games. Elite player development requires the highest level of competition and this platform will provide that.”

Applications for additional clubs to join will be available in the coming weeks. More information about the competition structure as well as the platform’s official brand will be announced at a later date.
